Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

You opened FBR IRIS to register your business, clicked around for a bit, had no idea where anything was, and eventually closed the tab. The guides you found online showed a completely different layout – that’s the old 2020 portal, which doesn’t exist anymore. IRIS 2.0 looks different, works differently, and almost no one online has caught up to that yet.

Here’s something worth knowing. In 2026, FBR can see into bank transactions far more clearly than it could a few years back. Banks are now required to report high-value transfers. If you’re a freelancer receiving foreign payments into a personal account with no NTN, you’re not invisible – you’re a ghost business that’s getting easier to find every year. A ghost business isn’t protected by being unseen. It’s just unprotected.

For freelancers, staying unregistered isn’t only a tax problem – it puts a ceiling on what you can do professionally. International agencies and platforms increasingly ask for a verified Business NTN for their own compliance before they’ll sign contracts or process invoices above certain amounts. It’s not just tax savings you’re missing. It’s bigger work, full stop.

The tax savings alone are worth pausing for. Standard individual income tax goes up to 45%. PSEB-registered IT exporters pay 0.25%. If you’ve been unregistered, you may have been paying the full slab for years without ever knowing another rate existed.

NRPs run into a different version of this. You need a Pakistani mobile number to receive OTP verification during IRIS registration, and that OTP expires in 60 seconds. If your Pakistani SIM is sitting in a drawer at your parents’ place in Karachi while you’re in Dubai, that’s a real obstacle – not something any online guide actually deals with.

Amazon sellers get stuck somewhere else entirely. You need an NTN for Payoneer verification, supplier invoices, and import paperwork. But which FBR activity code do you pick? Choose wrong and you could end up in a more expensive tax regime without realising it. That’s not a hypothetical. It happens regularly.

Some people have been operating without registration for months – sometimes years – not by choice, but because the process felt impossible to get through on their own. The system isn’t built to be easy to navigate. That’s not on you. But it is fixable, and faster than most people expect.

We’ve sorted this out for 500+ clients. Here’s how.

We Handle Your Sole Proprietorship Registration – Start to Finish

Most people who come to us have already tried doing it themselves. Some got stuck on IRIS 2.0 and gave up. Others submitted and later found out they’d picked the wrong activity code. A few discovered there was an old, forgotten NTN sitting in the FBR system under their CNIC – which causes IRIS to flag a conflict and block any new registration. Sorting that kind of legacy issue on your own is genuinely difficult.

We built this service because the DIY process is harder than it looks – and mistakes have real costs. Wrong activity codes don’t just slow things down. They can drop you into the wrong tax category. Mismatched CNIC data causes rejections. NRPs have a separate workflow the portal doesn’t explain at all.

What we do is straightforward. You send us your documents. We handle everything on IRIS 2.0 using the current 2026 process – not methods from three years ago. You confirm one OTP. We deliver your NTN.

  • Full IRIS 2.0 registration using the 2026 process – we work on the updated blue-interface portal, not the old layout you still see on most blogs
  • Specialist handling for freelancers, Amazon sellers, and NRPs – including legacy NTN conflict resolution
  • Zero government fee – you pay only our service fee, nothing to FBR
  • End-to-end handling from document checklist to NTN delivery, including correct activity code selection

What You Actually Get Out of This

Unlock the PSEB 0.25% Tax Rate

Freelancers earning foreign income can bring their effective tax rate down from up to 45% all the way to 0.25% after registering and applying for PSEB. On PKR 2.4 million in annual earnings, that’s roughly PKR 6,000 in tax instead of up to PKR 480,000. A Lahore-based UX designer we worked with saved PKR 85,000 in the first year. That number is specific because it’s real.

Open a Business Bank Account

Banks won’t open a business account without an NTN. Neither will Payoneer. Neither will Wise. Without registration you’re collecting payments into personal accounts – which limits how much you can receive, flags unusual inflows, and creates friction when clients ask for formal documentation.

Win International Client Trust

A lot of foreign clients and platforms need a formal invoice from a registered entity before they’ll pay above certain thresholds or commit to longer-term work. With an NTN, you can invoice under a legal business name. For most freelancers, this is when things start feeling real.

Zero Government Registration Fees

Unlike SECP company registration, registering a sole proprietorship through FBR IRIS 2.0 costs nothing in government fees. You pay our service fee and that’s it.

24 to 72 Hour Turnaround

We work on the current IRIS 2.0 portal and know exactly where things break and why. Most registrations are done within three business days. No waiting weeks.

Appear on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL)

Once you’re registered and filing, your name appears on the FBR Active Taxpayer List. Banks, clients, and platforms check ATL status regularly. Being on the list means lower withholding tax rates on a long list of everyday transactions – property, banking, vehicle registration, and more.

Register from Anywhere in the World

NRPs can complete this entire process using a NICOP and a Pakistani mobile number. Our team handles OTP coordination across time zones so the 60-second window doesn’t turn into a crisis. No flights. No in-person visits.

Section 65F IT Export Exemption – Act Before June 2026

Eligible IT businesses may qualify for the export income exemption under Section 65F of the Income Tax Ordinance. This exemption runs through June 2026. NTN registration takes 72 hours – but PSEB registration takes longer after that. If you’re in software, IT, or digital exports, start now. Don’t wait until May.

Avoid Withholding Tax You Can’t Recover

Without an NTN, withholding tax gets deducted at source by banks and clients – and there’s no legal basis to reclaim it. Every month unregistered is money you can’t get back.

How It Works

1

Step 1 – Book Your Free Consultation (Day 1)

Fill in a short form or message us on WhatsApp. We do a quick 15-minute call to understand your situation – resident or NRP, freelancer or Amazon seller, what kind of work you do. We also check whether there’s an existing NTN under your CNIC that could complicate things, and confirm which activity codes apply to your business.

2

Step 2 – Send Us Your Documents (Day 1)

We send you a simple checklist. You send back your CNIC or NICOP, a utility bill from the past three months, and your mobile number linked to your CNIC. No guessing about what’s needed or what format things should be in.

3

Step 3 – We Handle IRIS 2.0 (Day 1 to 2)

This is exactly where most people get stuck on their own. Our team logs into FBR IRIS 2.0 – the current blue-interface portal, not the old 2020 layout – sets up your taxpayer profile, selects the correct business activity codes under Section 181 of the Income Tax Ordinance, and submits your registration. If there’s a legacy NTN conflict already in the system, we find and resolve it before submitting.

4

Step 4 – You Confirm One OTP (Day 2)

FBR sends a verification OTP to your registered mobile number. You forward it to us or confirm it directly. That’s the only step that requires your involvement after documents are submitted. For NRPs, we coordinate around your time zone so the verification window isn’t the problem it usually is.

5

Step 5 – Your NTN Is Delivered (Day 2 to 3)

We send you your NTN certificate and registration confirmation. We also advise on what to do next – business bank account opening, PSEB registration for the 0.25% rate, or STRN if your turnover is approaching PKR 10 million.

Eligibility and Document Checklist

The eligibility criteria aren’t complicated. You need to be a Pakistani national – resident or overseas – with a valid CNIC or NICOP, a mobile number registered in your name, and a utility bill under three months old. No existing NTN under your CNIC and you’re ready to go. If there is one, we can help sort that out.

Who Can Register:

  • Pakistani nationals, whether resident or overseas
  • Valid CNIC for residents; NICOP works for overseas Pakistanis
  • Mobile number linked to your CNIC – needed for OTP verification during registration
  • No active NTN already registered under the same CNIC (if there is one, get in touch with us before trying anything)

Document Checklist:

  • CNIC (both sides) or NICOP
  • Utility bill – electricity, gas, or PTCL – dated within 3 months
  • Mobile number linked to your CNIC
  • Business address (home address is completely acceptable)
  • Description of your business activity (we help you select the correct FBR activity code)

Overseas Pakistani? You can register using your NICOP and a Pakistani SIM for OTP. No physical presence in Pakistan required. Our team coordinates the OTP window across time zones – this is something we handle specifically, not something you figure out alone.

DIY vs. Professional Registration vs. Other Business Structures

A lot of people ask whether they should just handle this themselves. You can – IRIS 2.0 is a public portal and FBR registration is free. The real question is what happens when something goes wrong, and something usually does on the first attempt.

DIY on IRIS 2.0 vs. Xpezia Professional Service

Factor DIY on IRIS 2.0 Xpezia Professional Service
Time to Complete 3 to 10 days (learning curve) 24 to 72 hours
Risk of Errors High – wrong activity codes, mismatched CNIC data Zero – handled by specialists
IRIS 2.0 Navigation Confusing; most guides show outdated 2020 interface We use the current blue-interface portal
Legacy NTN Conflicts No guidance available We identify and resolve before submission
NRP Support No official process guidance NICOP + OTP coordination included
Cost Free but significant time and error risk Fixed fee, fast return

For NRPs and Amazon sellers especially, errors on IRIS cost weeks. A rejected registration or wrong activity code can push you into the wrong tax regime – and correcting that after the fact is a separate process entirely.

Sole Proprietorship vs. SMC-Private Ltd vs. AOP

Factor Sole Proprietorship SMC-Private Limited AOP
Legal Entity Not separate from owner Separate legal entity Not separate
Registration Body FBR only SECP + FBR FBR
Government Fee None SECP filing fee applies None
Tax Treatment Individual income tax slabs Corporate tax rate Individual slabs on share
Liability Unlimited personal liability Limited to share capital Joint and several
Best For Freelancers, solo operators Businesses needing liability separation Partnerships and families

Built for Your Specific Situation

For Freelancers – The PSEB Tax Benefit Most People Miss

If you earn in foreign currency – through Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal, or direct contracts – and you’re paying standard income tax, there’s a real chance you’re significantly overpaying. The standard individual income tax slab goes up to 45%. PSEB-registered IT exporters pay 0.25% on foreign exchange receipts.

On PKR 2.4 million in annual earnings, that’s roughly PKR 6,000 in tax at the PSEB rate versus up to PKR 480,000 on the standard slab. The difference is real and it adds up every year you wait.

Timing matters more than most people realise. FBR NTN registration takes 24 to 72 hours. PSEB registration takes longer after that. The Section 65F IT export income exemption is valid through June 2026. If you’re in software, development, digital marketing, or design – starting the NTN process now gives you enough runway to get PSEB registered before that window closes. Waiting until May doesn’t.

We handle the NTN registration and advise on the PSEB application process in our Freelancer Tax Shield Package. Freelancers: see our PSEB registration guide for the full breakdown.

Staying Compliant After Registration

Getting your NTN is step one. Once you’re registered, a few ongoing obligations kick in – and knowing about them early makes everything easier to manage going forward.

Every NTN holder files an annual income tax return. Filing on time keeps you on the Active Taxpayer List. Being on ATL means lower withholding tax rates across a range of transactions – banking, property transfers, vehicle purchases, and more. The deadline is September 30 each year. Missing it doesn’t just mean a penalty – it temporarily removes you from ATL, which affects withholding rates across all your financial transactions until you’re reinstated.

Once annual turnover crosses PKR 10 million, Sales Tax registration becomes mandatory and you’ll need an STRN from FBR. Below that threshold, most sole proprietors don’t need to worry about federal sales tax. Exceptions exist for specific goods categories, so it’s worth confirming during your consultation.

This is the part most people miss – and most consultants don’t bring up. If you’re a service provider in Sindh, SRB (Sindh Revenue Board) obligations apply. In Punjab it’s PRA (Punjab Revenue Authority). KPK has KPRA. These are completely separate from FBR and each has its own registration thresholds and filing calendars.

Your federal NTN covers FBR obligations. Provincial compliance is a separate requirement. During onboarding, we explain which ones apply based on your province and service type.

Shops and retailers with annual turnover below PKR 200 million pay a 1% retail tax instead of standard income tax slabs – a simplified regime built for physical stores. If you register under the wrong activity code and get classified as a retailer when you’re not, you can end up in this regime by accident. Getting the right activity code at registration is the simplest way to avoid that.

A Real Example

Case Study – Lahore-Based UX Designer, Upwork

The Situation Before

This client spent three weeks trying to register on her own through IRIS. She picked the wrong activity code on her first attempt, which got her submission flagged. When she came to us she had no business bank account, was receiving international payments into a personal account, and had recently lost a contract with a UK agency that required a verified Business NTN before signing.

She also had no idea PSEB registration existed. She’d been paying full income tax on her Upwork earnings for two years.

What We Did

We completed her NTN registration in 48 hours. She applied for PSEB the same week and was registered within two weeks of that. She opened a business account at Meezan Bank shortly after and issued her first formal invoice to the UK client. Her annual tax bill dropped by PKR 85,000 in the first year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about sole proprietorship registration in Pakistan in 2026.

With documents in order, registration through FBR IRIS 2.0 takes 24 to 72 hours. The 2026 process moves faster than the old portal did. Our team handles the full submission – your only involvement is confirming one OTP. Most registrations are done within two business days.

There isn’t one. Sole proprietorship registration through FBR IRIS 2.0 is completely free of government charges. You pay only our service fee for handling the process. This is one of the clearest differences between sole proprietorship and SECP company registration, which does carry filing fees.

IRIS 2.0 is FBR’s updated registration and filing portal. The interface, navigation, and document submission process are significantly different from the original IRIS. Most guides online still show the old 2020 version – which is exactly why users following those guides get stuck right away. We work exclusively on the current blue-interface portal.

Yes, a home address is completely acceptable for sole proprietorship registration. There’s no requirement for separate commercial premises.

Section 181 of the Income Tax Ordinance is the legal basis for NTN registration in Pakistan. When registering through IRIS 2.0, your application falls under this section. If you’ve already attempted DIY registration, you’ve likely come across this term – it’s worth knowing what it refers to.

ATL status comes after registering your NTN and filing your annual income tax return on time. The deadline each year is September 30. Being on the ATL affects withholding tax rates across banking transactions, property deals, and a range of other financial activities – missing the filing deadline removes you temporarily, which has real consequences.

Common Questions Before People Commit

You can, and some people get through it on the first try. More often though, people spend several days confused by the portal, pick the wrong activity code, or hit a legacy NTN conflict the system doesn’t explain. Our fee is payment for skipping all of that and getting it right from the start – which matters especially if you’re trying to hit the Section 65F deadline or need your NTN in place for a client who’s waiting.

Completely legal. Tax consultants and registration agents work within FBR’s authorised framework. Nothing is submitted on your behalf without your explicit consent and OTP verification. You remain the NTN holder throughout the entire process.

That’s a fair concern and we take it seriously. All documents are handled under strict confidentiality and deleted after your registration is complete. Our privacy policy explains exactly how your data is managed. Five hundred plus registrations in, document security isn’t something we treat lightly.

If we miss the timeline due to something on our end, you receive a partial refund. If the registration cannot be completed at all – which is rare and usually comes down to document issues outside our control – you get a full refund. Any errors in your NTN details are corrected at no additional cost.

We have a dedicated workflow for NRPs using NICOP and remote OTP coordination. You don’t need to be in Pakistan. We’ve handled registrations from the UAE, UK, USA, Saudi Arabia, and Canada. The OTP timing issue that stops most people from completing this on their own is something we manage as part of the package.

Our Guarantees
